    putting a 5.0 HO in a ranger

my buddy has a mint 94 ranger reg cab shot box that is freakin clean looking but, is under powered with his 3.0L V6 so i heard a couple people say that u could bot a 302 into one. if it would fit i would pick him up a wrecked explorer or at least the eng, trans, and rear end. now the question is would it fit, and if so can i get some good info to do the swap? i think it would kick ass:3gears: and its either the truck or a malibu he wanted...but, ford for ever! but time for some beer and pumkin pie

Yes, it's verry commen Any type of 302 will do never herd of a 302 HO being put ion one though sholdent be all to hard though, as for web cite's there's WWW.therangerstation.com they crash alot though. and i forget about the other one, which is better in my Opion..

Basic things needed for this though is a Engine trany, rear end. Cooling system. Exsaust. Upgrade Fire. Umm :-? I think thats it ) theres alot more extra thing's you can do but... I wont trow you waay off :-D. Good luck mang. :-D

Seen HO motors dropped in 'em all the time...bolts in pretty easy. I had most of the stuff needed for the swap from my exploder motor, but all that went on ebay last year...

I think you need the Explorer motor mount brackets or something, but sure it can be done. I knew a guy who had an 80s ranger with a 302 in it. Really nice install, you'd swear it was factory. No idea what he used for mounts, but it did have a T5 in it. Strippo base model ranger with a 302, 4bbl, and a 5 speed makes for some awesome tire marks.

You'll have to get aftermarket motor mounts, Explorer Versions don't fit unless the Ranger is a '98+ when they changed the front suspension.

A body lift is pretty much required if you want to keep your HVAC system intact, or you can do some cutting and make the V8 fit.

An AOD is the easiest to swap into a V8 conversion. The Explorer Rear axle won't bolt into a Ranger without modifications. The factory 7.5 will be okay with an HO and AOD. If not, a 8.8 swap from a 4.0L Ranger is a direct swap. T5 installs are more difficult and the shifter comes out in a very poor location (almost under the seat).

Cooling is one of the largest overlooked areas in Ranger V8 conversions. The tiny radiator won't cool even the mildest V8. You can't go too thick on an aftermarket unit because of the already tight clearance between the water pump pulley and radiator. The largest electric fan and an HD stock replacement radiator is the cleanest, most effective setup I've seen working. Radiator hoses can be challenging with some setups. Some people cut thier radiator support and try to mount a wider radiator in, but that usually doesn't work out for the best.

I highly recommend you check out therangerstation.com, their tech section is great.

My 2.3 is about to puke something out, it's making a horrible noise at only 86K miles. I have a 302 waiting... wanting... yearning to be slipped in between the fenderwells.
