Hollow them out and run it till you have to get it inspected. If they're that clogged they aren't doing shit anyway.

You fixed it to death. Same thing with my car. Power and economy have gone to hell but everything is rebuilt/replaced/repaired.

Definately a labor of love w/ this car. It's like she's testing me. The day after her post purchase tuneup, the carb went ape shit spewing fuel. Then the tranny troubles, which technically through my ignorance of tv cables was my fault. Still I get the feeling that Im real close to having her rock steady. FINALLY got off my ass and put the new plugz in, next stop: a visit to the King Of Carbs (Tony is the shit), front bearings, new cats (Walkers). Im gonna have this car turned out if it kills me.

              New Ignition?

New plugs helped for sure even though none of the old ones showed any signs of jankyness (just normal use). Still gonna do something about the cats (may remove then replace at smog time). Was wondering what Id get out of upgrading to say an MSD ignition?

a msd! those are the shit, they will seriously shoot a spark a foot long. the actual ignition boxes are nice, they give multiple spark discharge which makes a rough idle so smooooth... I believe Accel makes a ignition kit aswell comes with upgrade coil and aftermarket ignition box.... but for 300.00 last time i priced it, i thought of better ways to spend my money, got my exhaust....

I was lookin (wishfully) at the MSD 6a. Front bearings gonna happen b4 all, but at the same time gas is so fricken expensive and I love this car so much that?

Not much on a stock vehicle...I'd spend the $$ on finding the other issues...

Word. Though there aren't alot of issues left: fr. bearings, mpg, eventually new cats, alot of diy little stuff, and SPEED!

Duraspark is perfectly decent for a stock motor. Maybe swap to a hotter coil if you want some extra oompah but at 180 hp its not going to be worth the cash installing fancy ignition parts. Not nearly enough compression to actually make it matter.

Removing the cats this afternoon and resetting the ecm once they're gone just for the hell of it.

4bbl intake will make it run happier than the restrictive 2bbl manifold you have now. With a carb you can reset the ECM to your heart's delight and its not going to matter any. Heck, unplug it, and it will still run fine. The MCU runs the VV carb and some of the emissions stuff, probably mostly the thermactor stuff and the fuel vapor canister purge solenoid.

Word. Thanks for the info. Never got close to removing the cats and now am just gonna straight up replace them. Still somehow the recent spark plug change helped alot even though none of the old (9mos) ones looked bad. She now hits 70 no prob. but from there on its slow going but she can do triple digits eventually. Out of curiosity what would one specifically ask a mechanic to look for/ check/ fix w/ overall "performance" in mind? So far all Ive come up with is timing, and vacuum, along w/ a visit to my carb guy for a tweak. I gotta improve my mpg and hopefully see some perf. gains too.
