    An RTV Poll...

I've posted this question many-a-time and I can't get a straight answer. The intake gasket I just finished replacing fucking leaks coolant out the back of the engine and mixes oil into the water, but not the other way (it seems). Now, when I reinstall the intake, do I use RTV on the gasket or not?

    Vote and Discuss.

"Butter" the gasket with sealant on both sides.

Only do loops of sealant around the bolt-holes and passages.

Install the gasket dry and only apply sealant where the endseal (good molded rubbery kind) meets the intake gasket.

I put the RTV on both the surfaces that the gasket will mate to. But that doesn't just apply to intake gaskets.

can i change the voting options?
you are talking about those cork pieces of crap, right?
throw those away and run a nice bead of ultra black between the heads.......use rtv only on the water jackets on both sides......butter it on........also dont forget to replace that pesky distributor o-ring
      good luck!

I should have specified. They're blue silicone molded type that have a lip that goes down over the edge of the block to hold 'em in place.

ok those are awesome......but a small bead in all the corners, and a little under those gaskets to hold em in place (helps keep em from sliding)
            good luck!

I installed those very same gaskets on my 86 TC. It worked out OK, the oil stench went away almost immediately and they stayed nicely in place while putting the intake back on. RTV in the corners is a must tho. Keeps it from leaking where the gaskets meet up.

I think the endseal gap is way too big for just RTV. I think I've decided. Because of the ptting in the lower intake I'm going to use a light coating of rtv on the gasket and a thin bead of it under the endseals to keep them in place.

When I mess something up or get burned on something I tend to read up on it extensively. For example before I buy something for my computer or something I read reviews and stuff over and over before I buy. That's kinda why I keep asking opinions and reading up, I'd hate to do the same job again. Each time I do it I lose confidence that it's gonna work.

I was gonna say somethin' else but I've now lost my train of though. I've had a few drinks so excuse me. I have the whole day off tommorow so I'll go kick some ass on it tommorow.
