    cheap 1.7 rocker arms

this past week, I replaced the head gaskets on the neighbor's 88 cougar with a 3.8L V6 engine. During disassembley, I noticed the rocker arms looked different. A quick comparison with a stock 5.0L rocker arm and the 3.8L rocker arm is longer and if memory serves corretly they are 1.72 ratio rockers.
So, if you want cheap, factory style rocker arms, find a 3.8L V6 at the local yard and yank the rocker arms off it.

Mercracer said over on CVN that the geometry doesn't look right...

and he knows everything there is to know about Ford, so how about someone do the measurements before anyone tries this?

I have to agree, it doesn't look like the 1.7 rockers are hitting the valve in the correct place. Usually you increase the ratio by moving the fulcrum back as well.

I am not sure how you would move the fulcrum back when the rocker arms bolt down in a fixed position and the distance to the valve is the same. The Ford/Crane rockers for the 93-95 Cobra motors are 1.7 ratio and they seem to work.

93-95 cobra rockers are crane rollers. With any rocker you can move the bolt hole in the rocker to move the fulcrum. the bolt just detirmines where it his held down. The center of the rocking point is the ratio detirmination. instead of drilling the hole for the bolt in the center, just drill the hole a little closer to the push rod. Obviously this isn't something you actually do, but that is the concept used. Making a longer rocker will cause it to overshoot the valves.

yes, I know they are roller rockers. who wants to offer some 1.7 crane rockers for a comparison?

use GMGTs rockers as the comparison. I would offer mine but, the damn valve covers are a bitch to get off because I have to remove my intake.

They are designed for a 302/351W geometry. They will not work on a 351C/429 because they are too short from the stud to the valve. If they were interchangable, then we would not have 2 different part numbers. BB Chevy are interchangable with 351C/429 but they are 1.7 instead of 1.72 like the Fords. BB Chevy are not interchangable with a 302/351W.

If you look at a general application list, you see that the 3.8 Cougar rocker and the 460 rocker have different part numbers. If all they needed to be was the same ratio, they would have the same part number.

The 1.7 ratio of the 302/351W rockers is achieved by moving the pushrod closer to the stud...
