Would the front end handle one of the big Cummins engines? A fully dressed 5.9 weighs about twice what a 4.6 does but damn wouldn't it be ridiculous?

I wouldn't risk it, would rather spend the time and beef up the front end to handle the 1100 lbs of Cummins goodness.

if the 6bt wasn't so tall, I would so love to see that swap done.

4bt's are hard to find, even harder to find one that has a Ford bellhousing pattern, most of them have the Chevy bellhousing adapter. I was doing research on it back when I still had my Lincoln. The Ford adapter was over $1000.
