wanting to know what this problem is...any ideas?

    hey all...

own a 93 Vicky, bought Veterans Day 92 in honor of my mother who had just recently died... with 45 miles.. all these years, nothing major, just replaced trany and cats in '00, just replaced cats again '11, and just minor work inbetween(alternator rebuild, fuel pump/water pump, etc). have a problem that has stumped everyone that has worked on the car in the last year, and this problem is getting worse..

will get to a stop sign/light, as im slowing down car will give a grinding sound, watch as the voltimeter goes haywire, then shuts off. Sometimes no grinding, quiet shut off. It doesnt happen all the time, but there are days where on a cold engine, 5 times in a row. Car starts up immediately. Alternator checks fine, starter checks fine, you name the air /emissions control part its probably been replaced(thanks to CA emission control standards). Think there is some disconnect from fuel/engine/brakes, but been told by three different mechanics that work on older cars(including CV/GM) that they cant figure it out. Forget the dealer, all they did was escort me to the showroom! i guess they figure women dont know anything about cars! all the repair manuals dont have an explanation for this, and the only other thought is that my trany/and or engine is going out. I do have an oil leak, but i dont lose more than a quart over a month, all temp gauges have been checked and if needed replaced.... i want to keep the car, as im doing a slow restoration and will be getting a new/rebuilt engine at some point (car is over 200k)...but this is frustrating me to no end.. any ideas? andrea

Did it start doing this after the trans was replaced? I'm thinking something is funky with the torque converter or torque converter clutch, but I'm not positive. The 93 uses an AODE, which is not a trans I'm overly familiar with. Another thought, does the speedometer read correctly? I know some electronic transmissions do funny things if the speed sensor is dying, but on the Vic, the speed sensor is also used for the speedometer. If the speedo works normally, the VSS is probably OK.

@ gadget73, tranny was replaced in 00, and apparently the AODE may not have been reengaged as my overdrive light no longer comes on since repair, and speed has been out since 02 when the car was stolen, run to Mexico and abandoned in front of a drug house a mile away from my residence...

@Ford man, they claim its good, but worth another check..

@Mercracer, cant figure out without spending 400 bucks to open the tranny, according to the shop, but other tests they did say its good...

i dont know if this helps, but the reason im thinking its a miss between fuel and engine is it happens frequently when the tank is down to the final three gallons.. and continues till about 5 miles after fillup...but the blasted thing always starts up, so the one shop says, oh its ok....dont worry about it, when the car dies just replace the motor and it will be ok.. i think you can think what im thinking at that point, new garage has been going out of their way to diagnose, but to no avail...this has been going on sporadically for about a year, just its getting annoying as its doing it more than i like now.....however, another thought...it did stop for a while after they replaced the sensor on the air filter unit....ARGH!!!!!!!!!

Stupid hunch: how old is your fuel filter?

Also, more details on how the gauge 'goes crazy' may help. Goes off the top of the scale? High to low quickly?

I'd get the speedo working before any of that though. If the speedo doesn't know how fast you're going, neither does the rest of the car.

yeah, if the speedo has not worked in 9 years, I'd have to wonder if those faults aren't related. It should set codes for vehicle speed sensor if the sensor is messed up or not feeding signal to the computer though.

The air charge sensor, thats the one in the airbox, should be replaced with a genuine Ford part. Seems these cars don't like afermarket sensors for that location. I replaced a bad on on a 94 with a sensor from Advance, and it worked for awhile, then started giving trouble until I put a Ford sensor in it. I'm not saying that is your problem, but only that it's worth considering.

Although I can't imagine what the air charge sensor would have to do with the voltmeter or be the cause of any grinding noise?.

@johnunit, fuel filter and fuel system check was done, as far as the voltimeter, it will sit close to the top, about the m, then suddenly as the car starts to slow, goes up and down to below the o range.. mechanic only checked alternator in a stationary position, lol, this happens when i run the car! but like i said, it doesnt happen ALL the time. on the speedo, i was told by the dealer(two different ones) that the speedo is ok as it doesnt affect the computer, the car can still sense speed. new mechanic and owner of shop (hi mother has one, different year, a newer one) verify this, and have checked out the computer.
@ mcninetyone, that was the part that was recently replaced, and i didnt have the issue... for three days, and it was a ford part as some of the repair work had to be done with genuine ford parts..

a friend recently told me that he thinks the tranny is going, but that seems to check out ok... and there are days with the weird weather here in San Diego recently that seems like every blasted stop makes it do it! then, like today, cold engine, havent run in two days.. did it 2 times, then behaved. BAH!!!!i love my car.. but..this is driving me nuts! also maybe because i got a full tank of gas too....
