What to look for on a prepurchase inspection.

My son & I are going to look at a 2005 Vic LX Sport tomorrow.

All my experience is with the box cars.

Are there any common issues or rust areas we should look for?

The owner says it is the Ford version of the Marauder. I have never heard of such a car nor can I find any info re: this. Is he deluded?

    Thanks,

    MM

It has the console shifter like a Marauder, other than that it is most definitely not the Ford version of a Marauder. Still a bit rare/desirable though compared to the regular Crown Vics.

I think the rust areas are essentially similar to boxes. AC condensation on the passenger side frame I believe is something to look for. The rocker panels, if like my '98, are covered by plastic so rust could be hiding behind the plastic. A large portion of the lower quarter panels are also covered by the bumper cover, so same deal there about hidden rust.
Not sure if there are any '05 specific surprises to watch for.

05 is a split year, so parts could be interesting to find if needed. Instrument cluster can be intermittent from solder joint issues. AC blower resistor (transistor) can have issues like all the cars. Drive by wire can be suspect due to first year issues (throttle valve can break). I think that's about it.

Did they fix the rear axle issues by then? I know 03/04 was problematic with soft axles.

Yep, '05 is good on the axles from what I've been told. The cluster issue wouldn't bother me but I do have my own soldering equipment.

The other thing I forgot which I believe applies to all Aeros and Whales is the window regulators. I'm currently in the process of replacing the driver window regulator on my '98. The rivets have been driven and drilled out and glass removed from the door. I'll finish after dinner tonight. Driving out that first rivet in the glass with a hammer and punch is nerve racking, but once you've done it the next one isn't so bad.

Yeah... the front door regulators have been replaced 4 times on both sides and rebuilt/modified 1 time on the driver side of my 93. HATE that design. If it had a metal bracket in the center where the cables hook to the cross bar that holds the glass and metal cable sheath stops like bike cables, it would last damn near forever baring pulley issues.
