Well... you can actually. So there was a 6G used on '01-'04 3.8 V6 Mustang that did not use CANBUS logic to control the charging. Essentially they're more akin to the 6G's used on early Whale Panthers with wiring similar to that of the 3G, except the voltage regulator plug is a different design and the stator is completely internal with no external wire that goes from the voltage regulator plug to the stator itself.

I'm actually using a 6G alternator on my '87 right now. Charging efficiency is a touch better at idle compared to a 3G, but total output is less at only 105 amps. Arguably this is the less common conversion, however. Swap procedure is very similar to that of the 3G, but you need a new voltage regulator connector.

+1 just use the 3G conversion kits. They're less mess and much more common than a non canbus 6G.

kind of impressed those electric fans didn't melt the alternator about 15 minutes after you installed them.

So the electric fans are a huge power hog huh.

They was recommended to me to eliminate the engine-driven fan thingy. I gained like 5 whole horsepowers.

Also, they keep the engine under 200 degrees F, so....

They sure are power hogs and fire hazards if not wired properly. Electric fans look nice and ensure great A/C performance at idle, but clutch type fans are actually both efficient and effective.

The genesis of me switching to the electric fan setup was the previous clutch fan having its clutch going south, so this was a solution to eliminate that problem.

Same reason I use e-fans. Too many clutches and new parts are crap.

My reason for using clutch fans is I had an electric fan die and overheat my car once. Went back to a clutch fan and have not had it get even slightly warm since.

The Continental has the best of both worlds. electric pusher that runs with the AC, and a clutch fan for normal use. In the BMW application the e-fan also kicks on if the temperature goes over a certain point but Ford uses that for the "you're fucked" engine light without actually making it do something useful. On the list of things to do is modify it so if the light comes on, it also turns the fan on high speed.

I haven't had any trouble with my clutches either. Replaced the one in the Town Car once because it failed the test, didn't make a difference. That was eight years ago and it's bad once again. Car doesn't overheat. Then again, I don't live in an area where it gets really hot. Our trucks still sport their original clutch fans, they're fine. Perhaps I'm just lazy, but I'm not one for doing stuff just to do it or join the club.

I didn't have the electric fans installed to "join the club"; I did it for performance reasons.

Yes, I get it, the alternator is underpowering the car, I'm going to be putting a more better one on.

I've found the idle AC performance tends to drop off before the engine starts to get hot when the clutches are beginning to give up.

I have a screen that continuously displays the temperature of the engine, and it sits between 190 and 1907 degrees F.

The heat in the winter must be phenomenal.
