Replaced the Multi Function switch today and had an interesting time getting the lock cylinder out. Had it in "Run" and probed the hole to push the "ball" up so I could pull it out. Finally got it to work but after reinstalling it I noticed the warning charm goes off when I open the car door and before I put the key in the cylinder. Didn't do that before I removed and reinstalled so is this normal or does it just supposed to chime with the door open and key in?

Sometimes the chime thingy gets out of place, or the wire gets pinched. Happened to me on my 93 once.

Guess then it is not normal. Could always try to remove and reinstall but not sure that is going to fix it. As long as it doesn't cause any harm, not really sure if it matters much. Makes sense as something has to trigger it. Guess the question still remains: Is it normal for the chime to work when the driver's door is opened before inserting the key in the ignition or does the key have to be inserted as well?What I Own: 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis GS

Even if you don't ever disturb the lock cylinder, that can get out of alignment. Mine is loose and I have to jiggle the key wings to get things back centered since they are no longer firmly attached.

+1, the little thing on the side of the ignition cylinder is what needs to be investigated. Should not chime without a key unless you have headlights on that you forgot about.
