Sloppy climate control selector (has play all of a sudden)

I've noticed today, on my '94 GMQ, the climate control selector has become very sloppy and has a lot of play. It pivots back and forth on each of it's settings, and it does it on all settings (Off, Vent, AC, Def). Here's a video of it, you'll see what I mean:

My question: How do I get it to go back to normal? What broke?

Also, do you hear that squeaking noise when I move the selector? Why does it squeak? Does it need lubricant?

There are tiny little tabs in there that keep the arm secure. Go find a new HVAC unit. That is, if you can find one that isn't broken already like yours is.
1990 MGM: $50 E7 heads, HO cam, Holley SysteMAX lower intake, HO upper intake with an Explorer TB. LSC ECM. Lincoln logs into stock dual exhaust. K&N drop in air filter. Wide ratio AOD, 2400 converter with a 3.08 one tire fire out back. Car is less slow now. Then there's the '92 Beater. Dual 2.25" exhaust with shiny tips. Rumbles nice. Super slow. Burns oil too.

Or replace with rotary knobs. See my sticky for the swap.

Poor design. My 90 has the same problem. You have to use extreme care when using the selector. You might check with Ford as to the what years interchange. Not all years are the same even though they look the same.

Are you talking about a squeak after sliding the control? Sounds like a vacuum servo opining and closing a door. Unless it is some strange audio distortion.
