Indeed, it does it's thing now. I think these may actually be easier to deal with than the mechanical speedos. There just isn't much of anything in there. One circuit board, the "motor" that drives the needle, and thats about it. No spring to deal with or any of that. Zero is also easy, just power the thing and put the needle on. With voltage applied, the "motor" locks itself at zero so all you have to do is get the needle where it goes and stuff it on.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

I actually want to pull that thing apart to see how it works. I think its just a magnet on the end of the needle shaft and its moved by shifting voltages on the coils to fool with the magnetic field. The actual "motor" appears to be 2 windings set 90 degrees apart. The voltage varies to shift the field around. Output from the VSS is variable frequency triangle wave. It gets up to about 15v p-p, which is more than I expected.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
