135,000 miles, '01 Grand Marquis 4.6. Just today started jolting on accel from a stop or a coastdown, gives a double bump then takes off. Small delay on accel, speedo is starting to register while car is still sitting then it takes off. I've looked at the dampner looking coupler at the front u-joint and its not slipped. It has no codes and the fluid is clean and red. I won't be able to get it up in the air til Sunday, any ideas on what might be happening? Thanks!

The speedo reading while the vehicle was not moving is what has me. That sounds more like something wasn't transmitting power between the tail of the transmission and the wheel. Not much in the middle there, driveshaft, axle shaft, and the differential itself.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

I'm pretty sure its a coil now. I drove the car from a cold start this am and I had to go 35 miles before it started, and now it breaks down when I load it against the brake. I replaced three last year, prolly should just do the other five now and get it over with. I'm sure glad its not the trans!

they last a goodly long time, usually past the 100k mark. At least when one craps out, you still have several other cylinders to get you home on. Single coil ignition is all or nothing. Also, no spark plug wires to ever replace.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Found the #6 coil tube coated in oil from the coil itself. Replaced it and problem solved. I was told that a shorted coil can sometimes feed voltage back thru teh harness, causing issues with the pcm, thus the appearance of a trans problem. No miss or codes found like last time a coil was bad is what had me going the wrong direction. O'Rellys had the coil for $38, took 2 minutes to change.

Cool. Interesting how it made the trans feel funny though. The only Vic I've ever seen with a dead coil ran and sounded exactly like you'd expect for a V7. It had a dead miss, but was otherwise normal acting. I think it was the #6 coil on that car too now that I think about it.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
