I posted this in the Areo section but it goes for all panthers.
After inserting the spring between the gears I then remove 1 grip which interferes with the ring gear then insert the spring a bit more with the remaining vise grip. When it is in as far as it will go by hand remove the second grip. A small block of wood and a hammer easily does the rest. The trick is to insert it just the right distance. The circle in the spring must exactly match the depression in the spider where the "c" clip needs to live.
I have done this several times and it really makes the job easy for me.
