Brake Upgrade for a 96 Grand Marquis

You can get good quality pads and it will make a pretty good difference. http://www.grandmarq.net/vb/showthre...ers-And-Prices
the big brake swap requires 16 inch wheels and is covered in this thread: http://www.grandmarq.net/vb/showthre...big+brake+swap
and a long wordy tech post on CVN: http://www.crownvic.net/tech/brake_upgrade.shtml
you can buy all the parts you need from ADTR: http://adtr.net/product/ford-crown-v...rake-swap-kit/
or go and harvest them at a junk yard. You will still need new rotors (always a good idea to NOT use the JY rotors and pads).
You have the "easiest" year for the swap as you won't need as many parts as 92-95 aeros and even more parts for the boxes.

Sly is right, I did a big brake swap on my 91 and I had to replace everything!
Then I did the same thing on a 97 and it was so simple. It's been awhile, but I think I only had to replace the calipers and caliper brackets.
Anyway, It's well woth the swap, especially in a 96-97. So easy!

There's actually a good difference between crap pads and good pads... but yes, the big brake swap is worlds better.

nutshell:
16" wheels
98-02 hub bearing
98-02 caliper bracket
98-02 calipers
98-02 rotors
98-02 pads
possibly 98-02 brake hoses
Basically just remove whats on there and bolt up the new. Not positive if the brake hose fits, but if yours are old new ones are a good idea anyway. The extra pad size, caliper area, and rotor diameter make a nice improvement and a 95-97 is as easy as it gets for brake upgrades. The older you go, the more stuff needs changing.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

I put brakes on the 96 last Oct I had the good pads and rotors put on, I did that because when I got the car it had a nice warped rotor feel to it. Well after a year the brakes are not holding up as well as I thought they should, have a bit of vibration when going 100+ and hit the brakes, and feels like it takes longer to stop than it should. I had my daughter driving the MGM all summer as she now has her license, so I spent all summer driving the R/T so now driving the MGM just feel it should stop better LOL.Last edited by kevin67; 11-25-2015, 11:24 AM.

The big brake upgrade cured the common warped rotor problem for me. Bigger rotors = more heat dissipation.03 Marauder DPB, HS, 6disk, Organizer Mods> LED's in & Out, M&Z rear control arms, Oil deflector, U-Haul Trans Pan, Blue Fuzzy Dice

I tried 95-97 hub bearings on my car when I did the big brakes because they were cheaper. The rotor was inboard just enough to rub the caliper bridge bolts. The 98-02 bearings move it maybe 1/8", but its enough to make it all fit. Spindle is exactly the same from 1995-2002, but the bearing is a CH different.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Something that might need to be taken into account is that people with small spare tires might not be able to use them after the upgrade. I was going to get one from an Aero today to take the place of my full size spare to reduce weight, but when I tried it on an early whale, it wouldn't work.

yup... 16" wheels only. Already sorted that for my 93 for when I put the HPP wheels on... then I'll worry about the big brake upgrade since I need to do bushings anyhow.
