    Changeover to later posi carrier style, When was it?

    Hi,

    I had thought the later style FORD OEM posi carrier, with the clutches on both sides of the spiders, came in with the advent of 31 splines but I was mistaken in that assumption.

    I decided to change the gear oil on my marauder and check the axles. When I opened the cover I saw the later style carrier. It made me wonder about the spline count so I counted the little buggers and found 28.

    Just curious if anyone knows when ford switched styles? Also I figured I would let folks know that you can't tell the spline count by just looking at the style of the carrier.

    28 and 31 are set up the same way, they started using the 31 spline rear in December 2004+ build(part way through 2005 model year)

      This is true. As I understand it they are interchangeable. Somewhere along the line Ford changed the design/actual casting of the carrier itself to put clutches on both sides of the gears. I thought it was when they went to 31 spline but they had done it earlier and produced the new design posi carrier in 28 spline . I should have taken a picture but the cover is on already.

        wasnt aware they changed the design of that thing. I could swear my original '86 carrier has clutches on both sides.


        Unfortunately when they switched production to the 31 spline, they quit making the 28 entirely so even finding one now is a real pain in the ass. Looks like we're stuck with used ones + a rebuild kit. Annoying. New ones used to be 200 bucks and the rebuild kits were like $50. Now we're dealing used and over $100 for a kit.

          When did they ever only have clutches on one side?

              The old ones still have clutches on the other side, you can see them peaking through the ring gear.

              Looks like the new carrier is beafier.

                I forgot they were on both sides. It does not seem lightweight. Just based on the Marauder they switched March 03 or earlier.

                  maybe related to the 31 spline change. Bigger axle shaft, so maybe the carrier casting is a bit heavier duty as well.
