    power steering

quick question: what should i use to change my power steering fluid? tranny fluid? thanks in advance. ( 2001 MGM)

    #2
Mercon V on the trans fluid. Not sure on the PS fluid.
These are highly engineered precision vehicles, the first step in diagnosing the problem is to strike the suspected offending part sharply and repeatedly with a blunt object, then re-test.

The owner's manual says regular Mercon:

      See pages 218 and 240.

My understanding is that Mercon V has a friction modifier to prevent torque converter shudder, and that you don't need this in the power steering system.

Use what you use in your transmission. Keeps number of bottles to a minimum on your shelf.

This. The PS system doesn't care all that much what you use. Go for convenience when possible.

Boxes like Type F. They run on Dex/Merc but they make more noise. Roundbody cars have a pump designed after JFK was already in the ground though, so they aren't so cranky.

I switched my box to Dexron and it came out quiet.

I switched mine FROM dexron and I took that new power steering pump off the list of things to buy. I'm still rocking the original at 190k and it does not make noise. The Mark VII was the same result. Owner's manual says to use F in the PS pump, so I do.
