I'd get a set of PI heads from the junkyard and have them ported. And throw in some camshafts and you'd be good to go.
    Or go TFR with cams.
The most noticeable upgrade I've found (besides blower/turbo/ nitrous) is heads and/or cams.

TFR? I am not familiar with that acronym...
Has anyone swapped a older posh rod engine into a 99 or up panther or am I just dreaming?

Someone might have but we don't know them

You are right about the size thing...a 4.6 is much bigger under the hood than one of the OHV engines that were put in boxes

wow... the side by side really shows it too. I knew the 4.6 DOHC was wide, but dang.

            Wow! That is insanity.
Is all that extra really worth it? you could probably fit a 427ci in the space the 4.6L takes up. (Don't quote me on that I really have no idea, never seen a 427ci before.) but that 4.6L does look massive for its size.

Are the blocks the same between SOHC and DOHC? I would rather use an Cast Iron Block as opposed to Aluminum.
Can you get PI heads that are Iron or are they all Aluminum?

I'm sure all PI heads are aluminum.
THe blocks are generally the same.
It depends on how much power or boost you want to make.
If it were me, I'd take the aluminum block.

                  Really?

I've only ever heard what I thought were good things about him. Having no personal experience, I'd be interested to hear why you mention this? Generally I like your views on things, so I'm thinking theres a pretty good reason.

By the way, to the OP: I'm doing a small build-up on the 4.7 SOHC dodge in my truck. Its pretty similar to the 4.6 Ford. Stock it is 235 hp; with the 5 spd, it puts right around 200 hp to the wheels. I am adding a NOVI 1000 supercharger with a stock pulley for 7-9 psi. It should easily make 300 rwhp with the exhaust modifications I am making. The bottom end will easily support less than 10 psi. 12 psi is where you start to enter the grey area with the Mopar engine.

The engine will be entirely stock except for shorty headers, and a revised front pipe collector. I am using 39# Cobra injectors, an SRT4 MAP sensor, and SCT tuning. I have seen numbers from 305-331 rwhp on this set-up, depending if the engine is an HO, and the tuner. I'm going with who I consider the best SCT tuner for the Mopar engines; Sean 'Hemifever' Powell.

This is with the stock throttle body, and no decrease in driveability, and a projected increase in fuel economy.

Down the road I'll be adding a 70mm Fastman throttle body, and either factory HO cams, or Crane 206 cams. With just the s/c and tuning, I'm hoping for 310 rwhp, and 335 rwhp with the cams and tb. I'm not interested in an intercooler, meth injection, or nitrous, etc. This is my daily driver, and I want power and reliability on tap.

Yeah, we're talking Ford and Mopar here, but for a comparison's sake, you can't get much closer.

Actually you could fit a 460 in there, and still have a bit of room to play. However, the 460 is several inches longer than the DOHC, if I recall correctly (32" with the 460 vs. 27" or so with the SOHC/DOHC), so you lose in other areas.

all 2v except explorer are iron blocks
                          explorer 2v is aluminum block
                          all 4v are aluminum blocks

                          all modular heads are aluminum

lots of horror stories about SHM; a buddy of mine went there for a tune after putting cams and ported heads in, they talked him into rebuilding the motor with their heads(same comp 270's), charged him $11or 12K, it made it just over 1000miles iirc before grenading. truth is, all he needed was a tune, and he was sold "upgrades"; car only made 270rwhp, and it made like 265 on a different dyno before going there for a custom tune(with the other heads and stock shortblock)
after I had my car about 5 or 6 mos. I put down 250rwhp with a stock motor and bolt ons! same car but his was convertible, mine was hardtop, and I had 4.10's, he had 3.73's
