4.6L camshafts and driveability

Its been awhile since I have been on here again. This past weekend I finished installing my Comp Cams Extreme Energy XE268H-14 cams in the marquis. It took quite awhile but I got them degreed within 1/2 of a degree of each other. However, I have noticed some driveability issues since the camswap.


1. It feels as if the Torque converter NEVER disengages while slowing down/stopping. Motor is ALWAYS trying to "over drive" the brake system. Even sitting at a stop light as the car "lopes" at idle it is sometimes inching forward.

2. between approx. 1100 and 1500 rpm with very light foot (trying to maintain a certain speed) the car chugs, or bucks, or whatever you want to call it at this point. If I drop the shifter a gear manually it is perfect again.


My questions:

1. Is this normal for a stage 2 cam grind to act like this in a somewhat modified panther?

2. Can this be rectified with a new tune with the Xcal2? The cam specs specify that I would not need a computer tune but then again I am somewhat modified not stock.

3. Is there not enough stall in the torque converter? I ordered a custom built 10 inch stage 2 converter with 3200 stall. I know this will work better for getting off the line but will it help with the bucking as well?

Yeah, thats the reason I don't want to do a cam swap, because of drivability issues, well that and money.

Well, I installed my new 10 inch 3200 rpm torque converter this weekend. Helped out alot with the cams as far as proper in gear idle and sitting at stoplights. The surging/chugging has not gone away however it is not as noticable with the higher stall converter. I have a new computer tune for it all but have to wait another week for my 24lb injectors to arrive. I wll post a link later to a few of my YouTube videos at the track!!!

I went out and purchased a new tune from a different tuner yesterday and loaded it in the car. WOW!!!! what a difference it made. I had gone out and bought a new tune for the cams/converter/injectors upgrade but that tune has been messed up since day one. anywhere from the car not starting to stalling and flooding to crap shifts and messed up tranmission settings. WOT from a dead stop the car would shift into 2nd at 4000RPM and the 3rd gear shift would be 5400. HOWEVER, with the car coasting and going WOT, it would downshift into first and run up to 5800 and shift into 2nd and shift into 3rd at 5900. Everything has been fixed with the new tune except for the bucking caused by the cams. Which I expected would still be an issue.

Lopey idle can not be gotten rid of.

I didn't expect a lopey idle to disappear. I wouldn't want it to either!!! The car sounds mean. The bucking I get is between 1000 and 1500 RPM with just the slightest touch on the gas pedal...basically trying to coast through town.

Is it a locking torque converter?
