    Mobil 1 extended performance

    Anyone use this?

Apparently, you can go up to 15k without changing the oil again (or 1 year). I wasn't planning on taking it that far out, but is it ok to use this oil for these cars?

I mandated Valvoline Synpower 5W-30 for everything in our fleet except the Fury (gets that ultra heavy VR racing stuff with high zinc) and Fireturd, which gets 5W-40 Synpower. I'd never take any oil that far but I suppose it speaks to the chemistry & quality of ingredients within that oil's package. We change our oil every 6k miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Being that the intake was recently ripped off my car the verdict of the oil thus far is in: engine is spotless inside. I've only changed the oil 3 times so far since I've had my car. Ashley's was also clean when she had her intake gaskets redone last year.

i have gone up to 6,000 on motorcraft synthetic blend. i dont see why you couldnt go further on a pure synthetic. just dont run synthetic on an old leaky engine or it will prob leak worse.

have you ever used supertech synthetic? i use that in my lss. not much more in cost than name brand dino oil.

I have no personal issues leaving a synthetic oil in for 10k.

An old friend of mine with an F150 equipped with a 4.6 said he'd leave synthetic in until 9 or 10k miles too. Talked to him for first time in about two years and asked him about that truck. Told me the engine locked up on the expressway...

I do my fake oil every 3k or when I think about it. It works out to about once a year. The Mark VII has lived on that program it's entire life, and it was switched to fake oil somewhere around 185k. I've been inside that engine and it is the most spotless motor I've ever had open. The one in the Towncar is not any cleaner, and it has maybe 1/4 the mileage.

My buddy's mom used to work for Mobil in the 70's when they were first starting to test Synthetics, even in those older low tolerance engines the oil would show no breakdown after 15K miles, those were hard run miles of testing btw. And that was in the 1970's! They have made leaps and bounds in synthetic oil tech since then.

One advantage of synth vs conventional is that there is no breakdown over the winter like conventional. (they recommend NEVER storing dino oil in sub freezing temps due degradation of the oil.) They recommend changing the oil once a year if you are using synthetic, but based on what I've heard from her and everything I've read, if you don't put a lot of miles on it, you don't even have to do that, just keep up with the filter change.

Personally, I change the oil about 10K miles using synthetic in our minivan, and the maverick's 302 will be getting it just once a year, since it won't get close to that (maybe 3-4K a year), however that has valvoline synthetic.

But like Scott said, if it leaks, it's going to leak worse with synthetic.

I use have been using Mobil 1 extended oil in the family fleet for a few years now. You need to use an equivalent filter. I use either Mobil1 (their premium filter) or Fram Ultra. I change all the oils every April which really makes things easier.

Incidentally Walmart has the best prices I can find for the Mobil 1 oils. They do not sell the premium filters around here though. I get those from RockAuto or Amazon.

If it leaks, it needs new gaskets anyway. The Mark was switched at 185k, I replaced the original cork valve cover gaskets at 225k and it had gotten up to the point of leaking a quart between oil changes. The original lower intake gasket was done around 240k and it was more a case of I was tired of the random piddles in the driveway, plus it was up to nearly a quart every 3k. I don't buy the "all my seals suddenly went bad" thing. I will buy that the gaskets were already bad, but plugged with sludge and varnish that went away with better oil though.

My VW has 10k mile OCIs. 0W40 Castrol specialty something or other.

I used M1 extended performance in my Ram (4.7), every 3500-4000. That motor suffered from inherent PCV and crankcase moisture issues. Mobil 1 its whole life and it was nasty inside the engine.

Back when I had my '90 P72, I used to run John Deere 15W40 Hy Gard oil (conventional), changed on a 3k OCI. Engine is still running today (has well over 200k), and if you pulled the valve covers, it looks like a fresh engine.

I started using Mobil 1 and or Amsoil in the late 80's. Did oil & filt every 3k. I met the owner of a taxi company that ran his cabs to 3k and just changed the filt & topped it off, his cars ran into the multiple hundreds of thousands of miles Since then I have done the same, BUT with a full change @ every 3rd interval. The white car's engine was shot when I got it, so don't let the pretty blue smoke fool you....
