Is it normal for idle to be different based on load?

Just wondering, on my '94 MGM, if I'm in either park or neutral, the idle is slightly higher than if I was in any gear. Is this normal?

I think that's normal for just about all cars. In park or neutral, the motor is disengaged from the transmission, so the motor just happily whirs along without any external resistance. When you put it in gear, the motor is working against resistance and isn't as happy. It's kind of like you having to walk slower when you carry something heavy.
