Oil pressure light coming on when cold

Starting yesterday my oil pressure light has been coming on when I start the car after it's cooled completely down. Once the engine warms up a bit (2 or 3 bars on the digital temp gauge on the dash) it turns off and stays off until the next time I start the car on a COMPLETELY cold engine. My oil level is full and the oil is very clean (only about 600 miles on the oil change). What could be going on? Car drives great whether the light is on or not.

    -It's a 2000 Grand Marquis LS

the oil pump could be going or something came loose.

        Try changing oil pressure sensor?

Based on a superficial Google search and a look-see in a Chilton's manual, I would throw the oil pressure switch into the mix. I'm not sure if it's the same thing as a sensor or a sending unit or whether they're different animals. Hopefully someone else can clarify this. From what I've seen, the switch is right beside the oil filter, and it simply closes the circuit when the pressure is high enough to activate it. It could be sticking when cold. As a first step, you can try unplugging it and cleaning the contacts to see if that helps. If not, it seems cheap enough to replace; though if you want to be sure that the switch is really the problem, you can apparently check the oil pressure with a gauge somehow.

to check with a gauge, you remove the idiot light switch (oil pressure sender, oil pressure sensor, all the same part) and screw a test gauge into that port. The test gauges come with a hose so you can locate it somewhere convenient.

Awesome, thanks! I will start with the sensor and go from there. I'll let you all know what it is.
