2001 grand marquis rocker cover oil leak.

first off.. im new here, i purchased my 2001 GM about 6 months ago when i was 16, it has about 184,000 KM'S (114,000miles) and the engine has developed a rocker cover leak from the gasket. When i went to replace it i could not for the life of me figure out how to get the thing off. Am i doing something wrong? do i ahave to do something crazy to take it off?

    Any help appreciated,
    Ryan

By rocker covers I think you mean cam covers? If so then, there's bolts going down the sides of them, pretty easy to remove other than all the wiring shit that gets in the way. Mine leak too, on my 06; no big deal, I don't really care much it's not bad.

Welcome to the forums! I'm seventeen myself, I see the whales are hip with us young people. Wooo! America!

          Welcome!

The fordparts.com site actually lists an "Engine Rocker Arm Cover Gasket" for my car, so don't beat yourself up. Assuming we're talking about the same thing (the long black cover in Bobcat's second photo; photos always help, BTW), another common term seems to be "valve cover".

I've never had or worked on such a problem, so I can't really help you out directly. I did look into a bit, in case I might have to do it someday. Assuming there's still an issue, I think it would be helpful if you described the steps you've already taken so people could see if you might have skipped something. You should also be more clear about what the particular problem is that you're having. Is the cover stuck on? Is it loose but blocked by something? Based on what I've read, the solution might be as simple as tapping it with a rubber hammer to loosen it off or as laborious as loosening or taking off other parts, such as engine mounts or air conditioning stuff.

I think they just didn't take all the bolts out..
The reason they're known as "Cam covers" is that the 4.6 is an overhead cam engine (This case being Single Over Head Cam(SOHC), this meaning, there's a cam under that cover. "Valve covers" cover the engines exhaust/intake valves and rocker arms only those engines have internal cams. Doesn't really matter to call it any of which because it covers rocker arms regardless I suppose, guess that would theoretically be the best term to use. Don't mind my rambling

In theory it should be a 30 minute job, but with modern cars comes all the electronics and wiring and all that fun stuff to cover them up so things can get complicated fast for someone not knowing every tid bit.

Technically, the fordparts.com site lists an “Engine Crankshaft Cover” that comes with the gasket listed as an “Engine Rocker Arm Cover Gasket”. For the sake of rounding things out, here’s a link for a great “how to” piece dealing with removing the air conditioning stuff to replace the “valve cover gasket”: http://www.cvpi.org/archives/p71inte.../wsdindex.html

I’m not good with names myself. That’s why I say things like “air conditioning stuff”. The bottom line is that calling oneself stupid for a trivial name error is rather extreme. Now, if he put motor oil in the transmission, ...

This should have been "Engine Camshaft Cover". The part number is 6582, and the part number for the gasket is 6584.

Ok. There are either 11 or 13 bolts holding it in.
                  That's it.
