On my '95 Grand Marquis, I get a chirping sound that lasts for 5 minutes or so and then usually goes away. The frquesncy gets louder and faster as I "rev up". Belt is about a year old so I was thinking possible tensioner and or idler pulley. Any way to narrow it down short of replacing them? The noise comes from the same area and as they are right next to each other I don't know how to distinguish them. Thoughts?? Bobby

Take the belt off and spin each pulley by hand.

nope, thats usually my first step with belt chirp. I usually do it while installing a new belt if the one on the car has some miles on it. Something about the FEAD system on the 4.6, they love to squeak. My Merc would always squeak when first started on a cool and rainy day, and it'd be over it by time I got to the end of the block. The only time it DIDN'T do that was then the Gatorback was brand new. Town Car seems to do the same thing.-Steve

The good news is, the pulley is the same for the idler and the tensioner. Both are bad on my mom's vic, but I haven't heard any noise since I changed the belt.Originally posted by miamibob View PostComment

Belt is about a year or so old (OEM belt) but the tensioner and idler pulley are two separate things (at least on the '95 GM).

Never checked the size of both pulleys but I'd probably change both since I'm in there. Just can't get in there, due to health problems, to get it done so it'll have to wait.
