    P0401 EGR Code

This showed up on my '01 Marquis today, says insufficient flow. Does this usually indicate EGR valve failure, or somethng else? Thanks!

Thanks! I've seen that on other kinds of cars, but didn't know it it happened on these too. I'll clean it out and see what happens.

New cars (96 and up) have an external EGR, so I doubt the passages are clogged.

If you are getting a PO0401 code, most likely the DPFE sensor has failed. there was a TSB about the problem and later Ford offered extended coverage on this part and only on certian models with certian sensors. pretty sure the extended coverage is expired by time now.

anyway, you will want to replace the DPFE sensor to eliminate the code.

I pulled the valve and it and the tube are clear. The valve pintle moves when vacuum is applied. What is the DPFE sensor and where is it located? Thanks!

I did some reeaqsearch and found out what it is and how it works, but I'll be damned if I can see where its located under the hood. It looks like a flat module with two vac ports and an elec connector, according ot the Autozone website. I see some sort of solenoid near the egr valve that is attached to it with vac lines, but can't see this dpfe valve. I've had no luck in finding a component locator online that was specific to the 4.6 engine. Any ideas?

Found it and replaced it! We'll see what happens. Its at the right rear of the intake and the two vac lines come up vertically from the bellhousing area. They were bigger than I thought they'd be, and covered with some other stuff. Thanks for the good advice, as usual!
