I think this is for the better. That 04 had too many miles and a mismatched interior that would annoy you after a while.

Yeah, car had loose passenger side front suspension, all of the seams around the doors were rusty, there was an exhaust blow somewhere up front on the driver's side, the HVAC wouldn't blow through the vents (only the defrost vent... which I guess if you can only have one that's where you want it, but still) and I watched him put a small dent in the roof when he put it up on the hoist for the underneath inspection. Car was pretty solid other than what I listed... and if it was super cheap and/or it was only one or two things, I could afford to fix it and drive it, but it wasn't cheap and that's that.

IMO the guy was a bit of an asshole too. Blew up at me a bit when said I couldn't offer him the price we had talked about on the phone... was called "you people", etc. lol Guess he was pissed off that I wasn't the sucker he had hoped for. Also, 10 points to whoever mentioned before that the guy looked like a used car dealer... he used to own a dealership (or so he said) and is curbsiding like crazy. He had like 4 or 5 cars for sale there.

Worst part was that I took a day off of work and drove 3 hours to look at this thing... which is on me, but could have saved myself the trip if the guy was up front about it during our two phone calls.

Anyway, that's that. On to the next one.

Got desperate and test drove a Subaru yesterday. Wife loved it, but I couldn't bring myself to buy it. Also, it was rustier than some other cars I have turned down.

Also here's an intriguing number. Super high mileage, but owner says all it needs is rear sway bar end links. Could be fun to run this one up to a half mil.

I'd be worried about the blue smoke demon on this one... and the timing set may have razor thin gear teeth if it's original.

I would move with caution, but if you are prepared to do some work and it runs good and doesn't smoke, you might get a nice car for small change. I've bought high-mileage cars that turned out to be really strong, dependable vehicles, like my '93 Roadmaster. 250,000 miles and going strong. I put about 40,000 of those miles on her, and it is probably near its end, but then again, it could run for five more years. For $600 though, you aren't out much.

End links, or end link mounts? they love to break off the frame on those cars

May be worth checking out; seller may take less? It's got your exhaust and wheels that would transfer to another car if needed in the future.

Thanks for the list To be honest I've already seen these ads and even contacted the owners of a couple. Just weren't for me though. I'm going to take a bit of a break from this I think for now. I have some other stuff I need to focus on until the weekend. I'll keep my eye on kijiji though and I will definitely keep my eye on here if anyone posts any suggestions!

That was one of my thoughts. The other was, it's worth about $300 if its scrapped and if I sell the rims and tires I can recoup all of my cash lol. Don't think the wife will go for this scheme though!

Yeah, lots of stuff is expensive to replace. The car was actually really good underneath. The exhaust was perfectly fine on this car... mechanically very sound. Idled quietly and reacted the way it was supposed to given that it has the crappy 4 speed auto. It just had way too many holes for my peace of mind.

Speaking of holes... there's an LSE for sale about 6 hours from me (desperation might be getting the better of me). Other than the rust hole, looks ok, especially given the price.

That might be a nice car. Price seems very good if it is in good mechanical shape. Maybe you know someone close who can take a look. probably that fender is trash but that may not be important to you.

Make sure the car is put up on a lift for inspection before you buy. It is helpful to have a code reader so you can see if all the tests are passed or just cleared errors waiting to pop. Also always check that all the idiot lights come up on the dash before starting the engine.
