I bet! The price of fuel over there probably discourages most would-be owners. It is pretty rare in my area to see them that nice. The terribly wet Pacific Northwest winters take their toll on the old panthers. And most of the halfway nice ones here went in for "cash for clunkers"! AAAAAARRRGGHHH!
I don't understand why more people don't drive these cars. Fiscally speaking, driving something like this makes so much sense. The money saved on the tags and insurance alone, just about makes the car pay for itself in a few years. I guess a lot of people want the latest gadgetry and style, so they can keep up with the Joneses. I'm so glad I don't have a dog in that race. Who knows? You just may end up with this buggy!
gas, gas, gas. Plus that a lot of shops can't/wont fix them at this point. For instance, with a daily commute accross Toronto (think Chicago or Detroit sizeways, roughly) you'd save 1500 a year on gas switching from a 90 Grand Marquis to an 05 auto Civic, just on the commute. Add in a couple roadtrips a year and you could EASILY top 10 grand in extra gas costs over the life of the car.

OK, I see your logic but you aren't figuring purchase price. An 05 Civic is gonna run you probably $8500 or more and an older TC say $3000. That $5500 will buy a lot of gas. You most likely will have to carry full coverage insurance so that adds up as well.
Panther - 15,000 miles year @20mpg = approx $2625
Civic - 15,000 miles year @28mpg = approx $1875
That is a $750 difference. So it would take 7 years of driving to offset the more expensive purchase price of the Civic.... (not counting insurance)

No box panther will get 20mpg in the same driving that a civic will get 28, sorry. I know this is a hijack, but just no. My Mazda 3 gets worse mileage than most civics, and it'll do 35mpg easily in any situation my vic would top 20mpg. Many civics will pull down 40+mpg on the highway, and few panthers top 25mpg.
Plus, most commutes (read stop-and-go traffic) won't yield numbers that good from either car. In the drive I mentioned across toronto I'd be happy to get 20mpg in the mazda 3, and MIGHT top 10 in the crown vic, if I'm doing it before and after a 9-5 job.
The equation gets better with whales and aeros, but a box town car? It's usually not the cheapest route if you drive much. Plus, even for someone like me that doesn't drive near 15,000 miles a year, each trip still costs more. No matter what the long term cost is, it's still 70 bucks to make my trips to belleville in the Vic and 30-35 bucks in the Mazda. And 2 bucks instead of 1 to go to the local burger joint, and 20 instead of 8 to go to the speed shop in Pickering, etc.
