Actually, I called the guy. He still has it. Says there are two big issues with the car.

One is there is a major drain on the battery, put a new one in a few days ago and it is already stone dead, and there is an air leak in the fuel line.

alternator prob shorted. or the wiring is dinked. they ran the alternator through that ammeter in the dashboard, full load. if that is screwed up, it all goes to pot. Which motor? Smallblock Chryslers are fantastic engines, and I really have nothing bad to say about their big blocks either. Also, be on the lookout for rot in the torsion bar mounts on those things. Chryslers had problems with the front suspension blowing out.

i love my 68 fury. 383 big blocks are the shit. what motor does it have? And gadget is right they ran the amp wiring from the alternator through the dash wiring. I love the torsion bar front end.

something else I remember about the 68, because a friend of mine had one. The alternator used a mechanical voltage regulator instead of the more modern solid state. Those "reeds" would pit and the regulation got lousy. Not sure if one could fail in such a way that would make it drain the battery though. The friend who had a 68 Fury Suburban (the wagon) had changed the regulator out to a solid state one from a 70s car. I think he told me it was a direct swap, or maybe he had to change the plug but it didn't seem like a big deal to convert it. His car had a 318 2bbl originally, but he had replaced the heads, cam, and intake with parts from a 340 4bbl, along with the ThermoQuad. For a smallblock in a 4800 lb car, it did pretty good. He actually weighed the thing with him and all his crap in it, so it really was some 4800 lbs.

OMG! I had one a few years back. Gold with a black top, and interior. 360 (5.9 liter for you young 'uns) Torqueflite 727, and power everything. I miss that car. The alternator problem is, like you guys said in the dash. There is a resistor on the back of the instrument cluster. it is VERY common, but an easy fix. Wish it were closer. I need to wreck another Toyota.
