When the bumper jack failed on me in the 70s, the jacking mechanism broke. It came crashing down. Trolley jack with a couple of blocks of wood work ok. Scissors jack from a pickup truck that has a broader base and higher lift works ok. At my age, I will call AAA and let them do the tire change or tow it home.

The bumper jack that comes with these cars is absolutely a non-issue. I've done roadside tire changes with them and they work fine. Never the slightest hint of a threat to drop the car. A manufacturing defect (the welds) is a different story - and additionally I'd never go anywhere near being under a car supported by one, since they're inherently wobbly.
Now, the bumpers on the car...different story. Any bumper with the aluminum backing should be considered extremely suspect at this point in their aging process, and if it's ever touched salt, it's extremely risky to lift the car by it. I carry a small floor jack in whatever vehicle is seeing the most out-of-town distance driving for this reason.Last edited by kishy; 12-09-2024, 12:45 PM.

In the 88 I had, the jack base spot welds failed. Just pretty much a cold weld. I welded that damn thing back together and rattle canned it back to black and called it a day. It never collapsed on me, but I also carried a small 1.5t trolley jack in that car just because of that. Hopefully the current owner does the same. Though the base is a LOT more stable with my booger welds than the stock spot welds... so there's that.

Pretty sure my bumper jack has a zinc plated mechanism body, I don't think it's painted.
I bought a small bottle jack to replace the bumper jack in my MGM, but the dang thing doesn't go high enough to jack from the frame rail and barely fits under the rear axle, which is a sketchy place to jack from with a tiny jackpad anyways. Front control arms are too low.

I have small floor jacks in my cars. Would NEVER use one of these!

It’s the only jack I have in the LTD, but like you said, only in emergencies. I think with my previous bumper core support if I used it, the rear bumper would have ripped off the car!

I think my base was black. That was all. I think they work well in a controlled environment. Unfortunately I had to use mine in uneven ground before and that was unnerving. I had to shim pieces of slate under the jack for it to get level. Not advisable in the least. I only use for emergency.

The tire jack is only good for looks on a restoration. Those things are deadly. I had one fail way back in the 70s. Never again. All the Ford products I have seen are painted black or grey.

The good ole widowmaker. Were they all painted? I’m pretty sure the ones in my 87 and 90 are not.

A head scratcher for sure. If I were in the market for a two door, I'd need to check this one out.
