Greetings,
I am selling my 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis located in Jacksonville, Florida.
I am asking for $1000 in $20 bills.
I have recently upgraded to a 1998 town car, and need this one gone to someone who can make better use of it.
The good:
- 5.0 litre engine runs strong and starts right up, regular oil changes have kept it clean.
- Transmission has always ran great and I have changed the oil a year or two ago.
- The drive shaft has fairly new bearings.
- The wheels and axels are all in good shape.
- The frame looks normal for it's age, I did not see any rust.
- The springs and shocks were replaced a year ago.
- The AC blows cold and the heat is hot.
- The seats adjust like they should, the seatbelts are fairly new.
- Radiator, water pump, hoses were all replaced a few years ago.
- Fuel filter, KN air filter was replaced a few years ago.
- Alternater and belts were replaced a few years ago.
- Battery is strong
- Brakes were replaced recently.
- Passenger side front window motor is brand new.
- There was a coolant leak on the heater hose that was fixed by adding a prestone coolant flush fitting.
- The spark plugs, wires, distributor cap were replaced a few years back.
- Spare parts include two brand new general altimax arctic tires, (225/70r15) they look great and have supreme grip. I also have a new set of power steering hoses, brake booster and a few other bits and pieces, including the door panels that you may notice are not installed. There is a full size spare (General grabber AT2) with fair tread, and two other old tires with a little tread that you can either take or I can dispose of them if you prefer. I also have a brand new set of poly bushings and a set of rear moog springs that will be included with this sale.
The Bad:
- The muffler fell off and needs to be replaced.
- The muffler caught on one of the newly installed tires and did some damage to the sidewall. I was able to drive home on this tire, but it will need to be replaced. The full size spare is probably the best option until then.
- The engine leaks oil and takes about a quart every few weeks.
- The oil leak has caused some build up on the exhaust manifold which needs to be cleaned to prevent a fire from possibly occurring. I will try to address this problem before letting the car go.
- The tail lights have to be switched on from a switch in the trunk, due to an emergency repair that did not become a regular repair.
- AC system has to be charged up every year.
- The window wipers work, but there is a crack in the plastic retainer which causes them to overshoot occasionally. I "fixed" this by driving a screw so that it would stop them, but it's just temporary and will need to be addressed.
- Brake booster needs to be replaced (spare booster is included)
- Emergency brake has to be released manually, and if you do, watch out! The handle broke off, and to disengage it you have to reach for a small lever, and the first time I did this the brake pedal sprung up and caused a painful injury. I guess you could consider it an anti theft mechanism at this point.
- The front end is working okay, but makes a bit of a creak when steering is fully locked, something that I avoid. It seems to be okay for now though.
- The rear shock may have been damaged by the muffer when it fell off, because when I rode the car home it seemed to handle like the shock was missing.
The ugly:
- The body work is starting to get a bit rusty here and there. The worst of it is a large hole in the trunk pan, which is covered by a piece of roof material and an old doormat!
- The paint needs to be stripped off and redone, various panels will need work to make them straight and level.
- The vinyl top needs to be either replaced, or could be coated if you think this is possible. It was very thin when I got it, and unfortunately got damaged by a massive hail storm.
- The door seals and window wipers need to be replaced, and I have no idea where any of these parts can be found. There are various types of repair that have been done to keep the water out, but it looks horrible and will need to be redone.
- The drivers side window glass was replaced but is currently held in place with a set of self locking pliers, due to the fact that the motor has been removed after it failed.
- The rear window motors are dead and windows are held in place with a screw driven into door frame.
- The trunk lock is missing and trunk is only opened from the glove box.
- The glove box does not open, but it is possible to pull on it enough to get to the trunk/gas release switches. This could be considered a security feature.
- The door opening mechanisms have all failed, and a temporary "pull here" mechanism was installed on the driver's door for an emergency repair. It's ugly, but it works.
- The hood release broke and has been removed. In order to open the hood, one must reach up under the grill and find a small lever.
- There is a small chip in the windshield.
- The window tint needs to be redone.
- The wheels are painted black, they could use a restoration.
- One or two pieces of the bright-metal have dings, I have a spare piece standing by for the worst dinged piece.
- The plastic trim between the tail lights and the bumper is not attached to the car, but will be included.
- There is a loose piece of trim on the rear bumper.
- Seat fabric is a bit dirty and there are some holes here and there in the interior fabric. The headliner is original and doesn't sag, but the piece in the back where the coach roof goes, that fabric was replaced due to the old stuff hanging down, and it's not the best match.
I think that's just about everything, if I remember anything else I'll update the thread, please post any questions here and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
