Last time I drove a 4500 it seemed to shift like most newer truck transmissions, moves pretty from one gear into the other. Creeper gear is real nice to have, yes, I particularly love the NP 435 for that - not only is the 1st gear creeper, but the reverse is even lower, it's 8.25:1 ratio IIRC - basically you let off the clutch and the truck starts moving, regardless of whether you have the house and garage hooked up to the front of it and you're trying to relocate them

I think you're letting one bad experience blanket the entire like 50 years of that model. Suburbans have been redesigned multiple times, what you ran into as a kid is just one of the many platforms under that name. Keep an open mind, and don't fall victim to brand loyalty - Fords trucks are just as big POS as any other, every manufacturer gets some things right and many things wrong. Having said that, if you like box Panthers, get a truck that is '80-'91 - damn near everything you know about your car now will apply to the truck as well, lots of parts interchange as well. Heck you can use car parts to upgrade the truck if you wanna go that involved.
Yes, I would love a diagram whenever you've got the time, no rush.

LoL at the creeper gear comment. I pushed my Fury around with it and yep, I couldn't tell it was back there.

"If it's got tits or tires it's going to give you problems." Open mind indeed. This GMC has technically been the 2nd biggest POS I've ever personally experienced, second only to my '85 LTD. It's all relative to routine maintenance and treatment of the vehicle or sometimes you get a POS right from the line, statistics will show that happens. Short of a blown motor or trans, which I've never had happen, you just keep fixing shit until it's set. GMC has had us frustrated for months but it's coming around and starting to make us smile and be dependable. Actually, even when the fuel pump died it never left me stranded as I was right in front of the house so I can't be too pissed at it. When I killed the coil it was in the driveway and I had a spare...

I certainly appreciate all of the domestics but I do have a tendency to stay away from late model Chryslers, although I would've picked up a sweet '88 D250 regulo cab, long box with a 318 + 5speed but it sold to someone else. I love the style of Ford trucks from '87-91, inside and out. I'm partial to EFI, otherwise I'd go for the '80 to '86 ones too, as I like that body style just as much, if not a little more due to the stand alone front side markers.

Believe it or not, I believe the Chevrolet Suburban is the oldest continually produced domestic model.

1935-present, without a break during the war (because the government used them). Guess we are celebrating 80 years of the Suburban this year!

I'm not saying I've never had trouble with my fords, but I've owned a lot more of them with less problems than I have with the GM products I've had. Also, the problems were generally less severe, aside from losing oil pressure in engines with upwards of 250,000 miles on them(2 mustangs). The s10 burned oil like a 2-stroke and never stopped overheating no matter what, the monte carlo ate a starter usually twice a year, an alternator every year or two, also burned a ton of oil, leaked everywhere when it rained, and the list goes on. Our suburban was an '86 or '87, which I've heard were like the worst years ever, but seriously, that thing gave piece of shit a whole new meaning. The power locks and windows were "occasional", the motor burned a quart of oil every 3-500 miles, which the dealer claimed was "normal". After they completely tore down the motor, checked everything, and put it back together with new rings, gaskets, etc, it continued to burn oil and developed a rod knock. This was all before 20,000 miles! Nevermind the various pieces of trim that were falling off.

What cracks me up is hearing other peoples' experiences. We also had an Astrovan later on, which was also a turd. It was even the color of a turd, lol. I've known and still know a few people that have Astro's with like 300k miles on them and nary a problem. Not so much with suburbans but who could afford enough gas to drive them that far? Certainly not me.

I'm also not really an SUV person but they are handy vehicles, especially with kids. I bought my first panther on the heels of having twins, and now am hooked. My better half traded in her Mustang for an Escape, and it's been a decent little car, but I'm not a fan of front-wheel-drive or little vehicles. The driving position in the escape just feels weird too, can't quite put a finger on it. Anybody else drive/driven one? Know what I mean?

Ashley (AshleyTheGreat) and I both drive boxes and dig them for various reasons. Also, I hope you aren't driving that unless you installed that brass replacement grommet, will buy you time. Ashley picked up her '89 Town Car with a smoked trans for the same exact reason but we parked it until we got that replacement:

It only had 2nd & 3rd gear (drive) but she drove it like that for about 3 or 4 months before having the trans rebuilt.
Won that auction. Brass should be here next week. Thanks to you and Ashley for help on this!

Buuuut no...seller calls today, leaves message that he can't send the part after all, because the part is "damaged"...but at least he refunded my money immediately. I'll prolly buy it now from another seller. Meanwhile, I check that replacement Ford grommet regularly, and it's holding up quite well.

Word. The replacement you have should last a few years if not more. I mean the original took twenty years to shit the bed so you should at least get five out of this one lol. Brass one buys peace of mind and that's priceless.
