Greetings Everyone,

I have a oil leak and I am pretty sure it is coming from the oil filter insert-to-engine block adapter ( I am also loosing coolant at a rate of about a gallon for every 1.5 weeks) I could really use some input.

2002 Grand Marquis
4.6L SOHC "W" VIN
130K miles
LSE Trim

I am looking for a procedure to do this with as little pain as possible. for instance..would it be easier to jerk the wheel off for easier access? from what I have read, from similar post in other forums, the procedure is pretty much straight forward. All advice is helpful and is appreciated

the oil filter adapter tends to warp and can cause all the issues you're having. Check your oil, it may be milkshake. replace that part with the needed gasket and you should be golden.

is there a torque pattern for the three bolts that hold the adapter on? I know the torque value is between 15 and 22 ftlbs.

What torque pattern could there possibly be? It's only 3 bolts. You could probably bs your way into a clockwise or counter-clockwise answer for whichever you wanted to use.

There actually is a torque sequence....went to the dealer and the parts department printed it out from the shop manual....all 4 bolts....bottom, mid rear, mid front and then top.. it was a fun three hour job....oil leak appears to have stopped and the majority of coolant leak stopped as well. Think my heater hose is leaking though...coolant dripping from the back of the engine....slow drips....man I don't want to pull the manifold again...

Derek...thanks for the info in the link.....very helpful and good to know there is a source. As I stated I have the actual shop procedure for the Ford certified techs...I will be scanning it in and posting it as soon as possible

Oil filter adapter?
Easy.
*Make sure you have a sutible container underneath it to catch the waterfall.*
Remove the hose. Let it drain.
4 13mm bolts.
Use a 10" 3/8 extension. That will help you.
Remove the 3 lower bolts. Then loosen the top one.

Pop the assembly up, and let it drain.
Remove the last bolt, and remove the gasket.
I had to use a razor and clean up the block where the gasket goes. You want a nice flat surface for the gasket to mate too.
My gasket was like $7 from Advance. Or RockAuto. I cannot remember.
Assmebly is the opposite of removal.
Use anti-seize on the bolt threads.
Torque to 15-22ft/lbs sounds good.
Reservice coolant and oil systems.
Start engine, check for leaks.
Ops check good.
Keep on flying.
