    New here

    Hello all,
New guy here. I was called over from Jalopnik/OppositeLock by BoxJohn (not sure what his username is here). Proud owner of a pair of 1992 Grand Marquises.

One was purchased new by my grandparents in the summer of 1991. It is an LS in light amethyst metalic with a light gray leather interior. It is my current daily driver. I live in Chicago and honestly have not seen another one like it. Closes was a GS with cloth interior. Is this a rare color combo?

Long story short, my grandparents never learned to drive and my grandma broke her hip so there was no way she could climb into my dad's and uncle's 1979 Blazers. So they bought it for their kids to drive them around in for typical old folk stuff. It saw weekend duty up until 1997 when my sister started driving and we needed another car, at which point it became my mom's daily driver for a few years until it was garaged again. I learned to drive on that car and bought another as my first car.

When I was 16, my folks and I picked up another off of an older lady. This one is also an LS in white with navy blue leather. I love that car. Many memories. I installed fog lights (which eventually met their end courtesy of long front overhang plus steep driveway) and put on the larger police size tires in black wall instead of white walls.

Unfortunately, it is in need of a bunch of repairs. and this is how it looks at the moment.

Here is what is wrong with it:
Oil pan is rusty, should be replaced before it takes a dump.

Only one power window works, and it isn't the driver's.

Front bearings are making a droning noise.

    Needs an alignment pretty bad.

Wipers usually only swing part of the way, not enough to clean the whole window.

Washer fluid doesn't spray, which is a real pain in the winter when ice and salty road water mist builds up on the windshield. It's been a while since it has moved so I forget if it doesn't do anything at all or if the wipers at least still swing.

AC doesn't work. Kind of important on 90 degree Chicago days with 163% humidity when you have dark blue leather and a big green house and only one power window that works.

I'm hoping the bags for the rear air suspension aren't rotting and will be fine once I can afford to dump money into the car. I put blocks under the back in hopes of keeping the stress off the bags.

I'll get to all that stuff later... So, here I am. I'll check back once in a while and if I ever have questions.

    Nice to meet you guys,
    Matt

      Welcome to the Party!!

MORE AEROS!!!!! We need more of these cars. Mainly, because they're the best.
You should be able to turn off the air ride in the back to save it some.
      1. Do the other window motors still make noise, but do not move?
      2. You can try and reset the wiper arms to make sure they get a full sweep.
      3. Front bearings are cheap. Use our site sponser www.rockauto.com with our site discount code: 45859E5AD63E
      4. Check the fuse for the washer spray. You can always get a new pump from the junkyard. (It fits in your pocket)
      5. A/C doesn't work? Smell funny? No Air? No cold air?

My first car was a white 92. I'm getting all nostalgic. :-(....

          1. The windows do sound like they are spinning. On the blue-ish one, I've replaced the drivers motor once and the front passenger twice. Fixed it each time, and cheap too.

          2. I figured it might be the linkage or as in the case of the power windows, the motor spins but isn't catching. Worn out shaft? Gears?

          3. That's the beauty of these cars. Most stuff is dirt cheap and easy to fix yourself. The wipers went goofy right at the end of summer. It the wipers had kept working I would have taken care of the alignment and bearings and kept driving it through the winter and addressed the windows and AC come spring. But the wipers were just the last straw. We have plenty (too many) cars to go around in the family so I ended up parking it and started driving another.

          4. I'm pretty sure I checked the fuse and I definitely sprayed contact cleaner into the switch the best I could. The wipers progressively got more problematic over time. I haven't driven it in about 3 years, but the intermittent settings might not have worked either. I forget.

          5. The AC works, it just has a bad leak I can't find. I have a set of O rings, just haven't gotten around to changing them yet. Hopefully it's not leaking from the condenser or evaporator.

It will take close to a grand to get the car safely drivable on dry days, a little more to fix the wipers for wet days, and who knows how much more to make it comfortable to drive on hot days. It's just a matter of finding the time and pulling the trigger on spending the money when I have a nicer lower mile one to drive already.

Nice! Yours is honestly the closest I have seen to mine thus far. Have you seen any others like ours? Google image search turns up nothing.

Do you have digital dash? Full power seats with lumbar? Single air bag? Cassette player, but not the premium sound unit? Standard suspension? Automatic climate control?

My white one has analog dash, power drivers seat (but manual back, manual passenger and no lumbar), passenger air bag, premium sound, air suspension, and standard climate control. Oh and the keypad on the drivers door.

Hi Matt, P72Crazy here ......and you ask "crazy"? Yeah, I have a fleet of "box panthers" and constantly fixing something! (Fix or Repair Daily). You're among friends here and you'll find a ton of useful information here. I'm looking at acquiring a late model panther from the NC Highway Patrol (if I can find an unmarked).

If the power window motor is spinning, replace the bushings IN the motor's gear housing (one philips screw) with 7/16 ball bearings (add a little grease or petroleum jelly to dampen their movement and keep rust away) and forget about that problem ever happening again. Plus, it's way cheaper than the official nylon bushings.

replacing the air springs on one of these is pretty easy and not very expensive either... so if they're rotted, just replace them.
