Hey what's up. I'm new to the forum. I just purchased a 97 grand marquis with 75xxx miles on it. Just wanted to see how long it will last for and what problems I would encounter along the way. I heard a lot about the plastic intake on top of the engine cracking. Does that always happen and around what mileage would it begin to do it. Thanks to all.

Welcome! In reference to the Intake, it can happen at anytime. I'd get rid of it before it goes!!

I can happen at anytime. And since you have a 97, it's 15 years old, so it's only a matter of time. I'm not saying that you need to do it tomorrow, just that it should be handled soon.
Who knows, you might be lucky and not have it break at all!

That is EXACTLY what I meant - I did not mean get rid of the car - only the Intake.

LOL!
Howdy. I had a 97 for many years, great car, congrats! The only thing I can think of off the top of my head, don't buy cheap rotors, and don't buy cheap sway bar end links, she'll eat'em. Tho that might be true with any car

unless you have the torque converter shudder... you shouldn't see trans problems until 150K or so (changing the fluid/filter at 30K intervals helps loads though). Even then, it'll just be clutches probably. If the shudder happens... that'll be a new torque converter.
The engine should go well over 200K miles. The all plastic intakes will typically crack and leak well before that though.

yeah... the coolant crossover is metal, but the rest is plastic. It's a better design and the one ford went to in later years.

I sold mine at 220k. I had to replace the tranny at 140?, didn't die completely, but got a low mileage tranny for a song and it was geting pretty bad, slipping a little and thunking. It was my fault, I had well over a half ton of stuff driving from Cleveland to Detroit City and didn't know I should've had the OD off. Everything was fine till I pulled away from the last light before the hotel, it slipped horribly (I thought I killed it). Was never right after that.
No engine trouble although it steadily lost power under full throttle as it aged. Probably a sensor or clogged something or the other, never so bad I had to fix it. Iirc the only time it left me stranded was when the intake went kablooie.
I did end up changing the IAC valve. When its' bad the engine starts but won't idle or sputters etc. I cleaned it a couple times but ended up buying a new one. The wire to the brake light switch on the brake petal broke. If it breaks you can't move the shifter from park. I clipped it on with a pair of hemos, stayed that way for years
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
X2 on fluid changes. I used synthetic oil until 150k.
I've seen the upgrade manifolds at JYs btw.
