It does have dual exhaust, and according to the door tag decoder I found here, it should have ABS and traction control. Once it snows a little more this winter, I'll have to take her out and try it. Of course, I suppose I could just pop the hood and look for an ABS brake module...

Floor it on wet pavement, with no other cars around of course. Light on dash TRAC will flash as the brakes engage to keep you in control. Also there will be a TRAC CONTROL OFF button in the glovebox.

Until you know if it is using oil or coolant you should be opening up the hood regularly anyway...
And you can open up the glove box and look for the traction control "disable" button.

Cool.. The HPP is not very common in that basic trim level. I have only seen a single one around here. Most all have had the Ultimate Package.

My neighbor had a GS with the HPP, it had leather too which was also rare on a GS. He bought it used, it had to be a special order car.

Okay, I'm confused now… I've looked at two different door tag decoders, and they both indicated that a "3" under BRK indicates "Electronic Traction Control System (includes anti-lock brakes)". Here's the thing though, as far as I can tell, this car has neither. I don't see any TRAC CTRL or ABS lights on the instrument cluster, no traction control disable button in the glove box, and there is no ABS modulator under the hood. I've verified the VIN number on the door tag matches the VIN on the dash, so I'm sure the door hasn't been swapped for another from another car. What gives? Is there some kind of super-secret magic traction control system for cars without ABS nor a limited slip diff? Methinks these door tag decoders are busted...

Okay, this is just speculation, but I think the decoder is just wonky. My dad sold Lincoln/Mercury cars new and used for 32 years and he doesn't remember this, but I think you couldn't get air-ride/hpp and ABS/traction control. You may have been able to option it with ABS, but I don't think traction control would work right with a TRAC-Lok rear end. The thinking probably went: Look, this car has limited-slip, there's no need/it would be too complex to put traction control on it.

Here's a link to something about the options on CV/GMs, my original bookmark of the info disappeared & this is the best copy of it I could find (they don't list comprehensively which model years had which options standard or not for all the various things)

So I put her up on the lift at work yesterday so I could access the rear end tag, and I can now confirm that the door tag on my car appears to be correct. This is an HPP car (Dual exhaust, air ride, HPP wheels) with an OPEN 3.55:1 rear end.

So it raises a bit of a quandry in my mind; What exactly is it that comprises the HPP package? This car (unless I'm mistaken) appears to be nothing more than GS trim with HPP and 6 disk changer. It seems to me this is a somewhat rare combination of options. Is there any way to trace and find out just how many cars were built like mine?
