Hello, my name is Fred and I like old stuff.

Hello, I'm Fred and I just purchased my 1st town car. It's an 86 in pretty good shape with a little over 140,00 mi. on it. I got it to drive my dad around as he has a hard time getting in and out of my subarus. I can only get hot air out of the ATC but thanks to this site I have figured out it is the blend door. While trying to remove the heater hoses I put a hole in one so decided to remove the big cast aluminum intake thingy that the air goes into from the air cleaner so I could get to the heater hoses to replace and noticed motor oil coming out of the furthest back of the 8 holes in it. I'm no mechanic but that didn't look good to me. Can any one tell me where to go from here? I'm afraid it is coming past the rings. It seems to run good the little I have driven it. I'd appreciate any input . I'm new to this forum stuff so please correct me if I'm not posting in the right place or any other newbie mistakes I might make. Thanks.

    welcome fred!
the oil is not a big deal, i'll explain to u what happens.
there is a filter screen for the pcv system in the back of the intake, these get clogged solid and the oil from the pcv ends up in the upper intake.
change the pcv screen (also called a breather filter) the pcv grommet, the pcv valve, and the vacuum lines.
since you have the upper intake off, it is also a good time to replace the valve cover gaskets, dont cheapen out on gaskets, use felpro permadry gaskets. if you see a bunch of oil on the transmission bellhousing, the lower intake gasket needs to be replaced also, whenever replacing the lower intake gasket ALWAYS change the oil before starting the engine back up, antifreeze gets in the crankcase when you pull the lower intake.
    welcome to gmn mang!

Thanks everyone for the replies, especially Lincolnmania. I think I can handle valve cover gaskets and a pcv valve replacement. Unfortunatly, I went to town and got the gaskets from napa today after work and opted for the cork. It's 45 miles one way to the closest parts store and another Kalispell for a choice of about 4 more. But it sure is good news if it's only the pcv valve. I have the ford manual for the body, electrical, vacuum and some other stuff but nothing on the engine other than a haynes. It gives a rough idea where to find the pcv valve and I'll try to find a better engine manual. Its snowing today and no heat in the shed but it looks like another parts run anyway. Thanks again and I'll get some photos when and if the sun ever shines here south of Glacier Park, Montana.

PCV valve is on the back of the lower intake. You can access it by reaching back there with your hand and pulling the valve out. An easier way, since you're replacing gaskets anyway (I advise against cork unless you want to do it again), pull the upper intake, it makes it easier to get to the valve. Replace the vacuum hoses while you got that off. Replace the PCV valve, the rubber grommet holding it in, and the filter screen under the grommet. Look at the exploded view of the engine in your haynes manual to see where the valve is.
