Hello from Norway - plus car stereo questions

    Hello guys,

Wanted to say hello. Just found this forum, as I was looking for info on the car I just bought, a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis LS with 57000 miles on it, which is a very very rare car here in Norway where I live - and specifically info on a replacement stereo head unit for it.

My car only has a tape player, and I want a cd player in it. Looks-wise, I would prefer a stock Ford cd player, but am afraid that the sound would be sub-par in it. As for stock 1.5 din Ford cd player units, would a much newer unit work in my car? Or would I have to go for one that's about the same age as my car.

Are there any other decent aftermarket 1.5 options beside the Pioneer units? Specifically, any that also play mp3 cds?

I would like to hear some of you guys' opinion on this!

    Thanks!

    Jan.

Depending what stereo system you currently have, you may be surprised by the stock Ford stuff. If the current system sounds good, the CD player would sound the same. Of course, the premium sound cars have much better sounding stuff than non-premium sound. Most Ford head units are interchangable, so if you locate one that looks to be the same size from a similar year car, it should just plug in.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys! And also thanks for your help so far.

Lincolnmania, I hear ya on the shipping to Norway thing - been there, done that for sure. (Had several Ford Tauruses before). But that won't be a problem this time, thankfully. I am going on a seven week road trip in the US this summer in my '99 Ford E-150 camper van that is in storage at a friend's place in Idaho, so I will be able to pick up whichever head unit we decide on and bring it back home with me in my luggage...

Jason_MarkVI - I live in a little farming community half an hours' drive south of the city of Stavanger, on the southwestern coast of Norway. My Grand Marq came from the Oslo area, however.

                Funny, I never knew that!

My wife's family on her mom's side is primarily Swedish (Americans, don't ever let anyone tell you Swedes aren't scary at first!), and when they tell Ole and Sven jokes, Ole and Sven are always Norwegian.
