    Single turbo box project

Well im a long time reader and just a recent active member. Im 22yrs old. I have a 91 grand marquis gs which im currently doing the H.O. conversion with a A9P ecu and a 70mm mass air sensor. Working on custom throttle/tv cable bracket to use a 70mm mustang egr delete plate. Also ive already swapped in a mustang AOD. It has a 3.08 limited slip rear. And no a/c or smog pump. Anyway enough rambling just thought i would fill you in on what it already is and has. So for the future plans. I plane on a single turbo setup fabricated by myself. I will fab the hot side from bbk shorties and 2.5'' mandrel tubing. A 4'' downpipe spliting into 2.5'' duals dumping at the axle with no muffler will be the exhaust choice. I will be using a master power t70 turbo as it seems to be the choice for singles on www.turbomustangs.com . It will be external wastgate still havent chose brand and 10-12 lbs is planned boost level. Cold side will be 2.5'' aluminum mandrel tube with a large front mount intercooler
since lets face it us box owners have plenty of room to spare haha. As for the fuel system the plan is 42 lbers with billet fuel rails and my own fabricated AN fuel lines from front to back. Plan on using the intank pump as a supply pump for a large inline boost-a-pump setup. As for fuel management I plan on the anderson PMS unit. Outback we will have a the battery relocated to the trunk and a set of 3.55 or 3.73 gears since turbo cars like a little higher gear. Power goals are 450-500 hp which is easily done on a stock 5.0 and at that power level it will also produce 450-500 ft. lbs so it should motivate my box very well. This is by no means a race car. It is goin to be a full interior stock apperance street car. AKA one hell of a sleeper haha. Sorry for the novel if i forgot anything or you all have any question please feel free to ask. Please comment and let me know what you all think. I think i am the first to do a turbo box let me know.

    Sounds fun!

Beef up that trans though, or install a 5 speed!

HO conversion or swap? if you are converting your lopo 5.0 to HO without changing to forged pistons you can probably kiss the stockers good by with some boost. I have always liked the idea of putting a turbo in a box good luck and i hope it turns out well!

You might wan to keep the 3.08 gear since its a higher gear ratio a 3.55 or 3.73 would be a lower ratio. But you are correct turbo's like higher gears

Sounds like some neat plans! Random thought, is a 4" turbo downpipe appropriate for a 400hp car? My only turbo knowledge is Buick 3.8L based (and very scanty at that), but I know their downpipe was nowhere near 4". I'm wondering if something more like a 2.5" single downpipe would be better for keeping velocity up ... maybe I'll have to browse for some Turbo Regal sites for a better idea on that.....

86bbub - I mean the swap sorry for the confusion haha

Grand Marquis GT - a 5 speed is in serious consideration seem like it would make it alot more fun to drive also and i personally hate auto cars so who knows?

Updates on the swap and pictures to come soon

Sorry no pics yet soon to come of the car in its current state ''swapping the h.o. right now''

I know i will need breaks havent decided which route to go yet any suggestions?

A 3-4'' down pipe is a very good size you dont really need to worry about velocity because its after the turbo so you just want the exhaust to get out as fast and as easy as possible.

Cool project, I've had the parts and plans to build a single turbo box before.

You're wrong about the gear though, 3.27 or 3.55 is what turbos like, the added load make the turbos work better. The AOD will not last long with that kind of torque, plan on upgrading soon. I'd run a 4" DP with 3" single exhaust though, probably cheper and easier than going duals.

As for brakes, there are tons of big brake swap threads with all the info you need.
