While it won't help with actual engine performance, a rear gear swap would give you a noiceable seat-of-the-pants difference. You probably have 2.73's or 3.08's now. For a lot of interstate use, swap to 3.27. For highway/city mix, 3.55 is ideal. For city, you can go to 3.73 or even 4.10's, but highway MPG will likely suffer.

You can find a 3.27 posi rear end with disk brakes in a junkyard, shouldn't be too hard to find. Those would be on 92-97 PI's, and possibly later models.

welcome to GMN. my 1987 CV tudor has 3.27 open rear gears. it scooted, but now it sits needing an engine. it is a project now that is gonna take time as will yours. it might have sat all winter but i wont part with it. these cars are addictive. trust me, i know, since i have now been an owner of 5. there are others here that will agree they are addictive. best ones to find are the tudors also. i would love to have another. have fun and we will all answer your questions.
