Bring the VW. I've never seen one up close and personal that still worked. The only autostick car I've seen had been converted to a 4 speed.

34PICT or 31PICT? the 34 was often replaced with the 31 when the 34 shit the bed. They're not real hard to tune though, there is a big brass screw to set the idle speed, and a small screw for fuel mix. The screw on the side is a throttle stop, if I remember right it should be adjusted so it just touches the high idle cam when the throttle is closed and the idle cam is off. Fuel mix you want to adjust for max vacuum at the same rpm. Basically you'll go back and forth between the mix screw and the idle speed screw to get the max vacuum, then turn the fuel mix screw in 1/4 turn.

Mind you I last had a stock carb on a Beetle in 1998, so my memory on this process might be fuzzy.

                      34...

I think I got it tuned pretty good. Once I noticed that 180 degrees off of the large timing mark on the pulley is another mark that appears to be about 5 atdc. Once I set the timing by that mark, it adjusted up pretty nice. Only issue was I read to start at 2.5 turns out, but had to go closer to 4 to actually get it idling right.

Runs smooth with decent power, so I am happy. As soon as that axle nut tool shows up I can get the brakes fixed and back on the road.

Yes. It's great you're driving a fucking long ways to go to SF.

If you need the socket, I have one. I don't have a special tool, I used a breaker bar and a cheater pipe but it did work. The first time though, I used my uncle's 1" drive socket set to break the nuts loose. They just wouldn't let go otherwise.
