car buying inquiry

I have been looking at newer panthers, but I have not owned one in years. What are some common issues I should look for? I am looking at 2003+ cars. Specifically P71's, but I am not ruling out the Mercs either.

My first car was a panther, 1982 Lincoln Continental Mark VI coupe.

I wouldn't think an '03+ would be old enough to have developed issues!

the only thing to check for is cracks in the plastic intake where it meets the heads. Other than that... 03+ have pretty much solved the chronic issues of previous years. Check the normal stuff... leaks, worn suspension parts... look for cracking rubber under the hood and vinyl/leather tops/interior parts if equipped. Make sure EVERYTHING electrical works. if it's hot out, run the heater and the AC. Check all the switches and make sure everything works. The usual for buying a used car. Make sure the steering doesn't groan... that could be expensive. Older models... groans usually just meant time for a new pump... but the rack has it's own special brand of hurt when it groans. And seriously... it should not groan. Personally I'd avoid air ride equipped cars, but some people like it and are willing to deal with the issues. Regular springs and shocks for me thanks.

Is this the same plastic one as the 4.6 in the older mustang GT's?

the 03+ has the aluminum crossover pipe for the coolant... other than that... it's plastic. I have no clue if it's the same as a mustang.

I believe the GM's up to '01 had the plastic (96/97-01). Perhaps someone can verify.....

99-03 had a timing chain issue, a tensioner or guide wears out prematurely. Fixed in 04+.

I love the 03, it's amazing that an old fashioned American body on frame RWD V8 can be, well, so excellent. Good luck!
