Mustang Halo Headrests

This thread is about adapting your existing Panther headrests to accommodate Mustang Halo headrests. Why bother? Why the hell not, they look good.
Anyways here is a list of items you will need to make this happen:
• Mustang Halo Headrests duh (got mine off of e-bay) (I believe 79- 86 Capri’s had them as well)
• Panther headrests (on your car already sillies)
• A good dremel with good bits (to grind away at the headrests collar)
• Someone who knows how to weld aluminum
• Flathead screwdriver and a buddy to remove panther headrest
• Hacksaw and tape measure.
• Door panel tool
Ok first off you will need to remove your existing Panther headrest from your seats. To do this you will need do get a door panel tool and remove the 6 annoying plastic push thingy’s that retain the access panel on the back of you split bench seats. Then crawl on you ass and pry the little tab retaining the headrest, with the screwdriver, and have your buddy pull the headrest out, making sure to not destroy your headliner in the process. Cool now repeat on the other side, and make sure to remove the black collars as well because you will need them later.
Nice so now you have two Panther headrests and no Mustang Halo headrests because you forgot to purchase it.
Fast forward two weeks later.
Ok so now you should have two Panther headrests and two Mustang Halo headrests. The Panther headrest total post length is 9 ½ inches long (wow is someone packing or what) and the Mustang Halo headrest measures in at a measly 7 ¼ inches (someone’s jealous) but they do have more girth. In order to use the Mustang Halo headrests we need to cut the Panther headrest posts so they can be welded onto the Mustang Halo one and slide into the headrests support on the Panther seats. To do this we need to break out the hacksaw and tape measure, please do not use the cute little Polish one with foot prints as foot markers. Let’s cut the panther post first. To do this you need to measure from the bottom of the post up 7 inches, do this for both panther posts. If you did this correctly you should have two pieces of aluminum both 7 inches in length, if not…YOU FAIL.. no j/k hit up the j/y’s I guess. Next up is cutting the Mustang Halo posts. To do this you use your tape measure and measure up from the bottom 5 ¾ inches leaving you with approximately 1 ½ inches attached to each of your Mustang Halo headrests. Next up is welding!
I don’t weld especially aluminum, so hand this step off to a friend. What you should tell your friend to do is to weld the 7 inch piece to the protruding 1 ½ inch piece out of the Mustang Halo headrest, MAKE SURE TO KEEP THE BACK OF EACH PIECE FLUSH, because in fact the two posts do have different widths and thicknesses. Ok if this step was done correctly by your welder friend it should look like this……

And this…..

Great, now you have the giant pain in the ass of turning these……

Into this mess….

You need to trim/hack the shit out of the collars to accommodate the larger post of the halo headrest. These collars are vital because they ensure a firm fit within your seats. To do this you just grind away A LOT checking every so often your fit like this……

Till you end up with something like this…..

(Ideally you would like to have the flat part of the collar as close as possible to the bottom of the Mustang Halo headrest.)
See this is what you just accomplished….

Nice job!
Now its time for the reward, go slip those collars into their holes in the back of the seats, and cram those newly designed Panther/Mustang headrest into their respective slots. It may be tight, but it is always like that the first time.
Now step back and look at what you done!
You just went from this……….

To this……..

Enjoy!!
